September 08, 2010 08:33 pm | Updated 08:33 pm IST - KOTTAYAM:

The Lifelong Education Awareness Programme (LEAP) Kerala Mission was launched in the district on Wednesday. Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran announced the launch of the LEAP district mission.

“A person does not become a literate simply by knowing the letters. He should be aware of his social responsibilities,” the Minister said. “The journey to attain literacy never comes to an end. One should persevere to better himself. Consequently, this would increase his efficiency and productivity,” said Mr. Ratnakaran.

He emphasised the need for a collective effort to make the mission a success in its entirety.

The LEAP Kerala Mission aims at drastic changes in literacy programmes with emphasis on job-oriented training and better awareness. The programme will primarily include skill development, vocational training and improvement of quality of life, besides attainment of total primary education. A highlight of the programme is that adults, irrespective of any age limit, who have the physical and mental ability for learning, can enrol under the mission.

Kottayam district panchayat president T.N. Rameshan presided over the function. Vice-president Sebastian Kullattungal and K. Anil Kumar, chairman, Education Standing Committee, spoke on the occasion.
