LDF withdraws hartal call in Idukki

September 02, 2010 07:47 pm | Updated 07:47 pm IST - KATTAPPANA:

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) has decided to withdraw its hartal in Idukki district on September 13 and 14. This is in the wake of a Cabinet decision on Thursday to take steps for issuing condition-free title deeds to all farmers who settled prior to January 1, 1977 in the district.

The Cabinet has decided to amend the special rule of 1993, the main impediment in issuing the title deeds. A press release issued by the LDF district committee said farmers will be able to get title deeds as a positive decision had been taken.

In the wake of the Cabinet decision, it said, there was no point in going ahead with the hartal. The release also complemented the government for taking active steps in alleviating the problems of settler-farmers in the district.

The High Range Protection Council had called a 48-hour hartal on the same days in Udumbanchola, Devikulam and Peerumade taluks and in Vazhathoppe and Kanjikuzhi grama panchayats of Thodupuzha taluk raising the same demand. The United Democratic Front is supporting the council hartal.
