Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan said here on Wednesday that the mistakes and deficiencies of the CPI (M) and LDF that led to the Front’s defeat in the elections to the local self governments would be corrected.

Speaking to the media after Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister said that polls did not bring the expected victories for the Front. The corrections that are needed in view of the defeat would be seriously examined and steps taken to gather strength for victories in future. It was not unusual for left parties to face victories and defeats in succession.

Replying to questions, the Chief Minister said that it was not the programme of the Front to please religious and communal forces. “We are a secular, democratic and leftist movement.”

The Congress and other Opposition parties had appeased religious and communal forces to win the elections, and as a result, could win seats. Though the government had done many things in public interest and for the benefit of the people, the party and the Front could not ensure that they reached the people. Asked about his party’s defeat in Ochiyam at the hands of dissidents, Mr. Achuthanandan said that several ‘phenomena’ had contributed to the defeat in the elections. He was not going into the details.
