Probe into Chandy’s role in scam

The subcommittee constituted by the State committee of the Opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF) has decided to insist on inclusion of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and his office under the ambit of the judicial probe into the solar scam.

The subcommittee, which met here on Tuesday afternoon, felt that the focal point of the inquiry should be the ‘conspiracy’ hatched by the scam accused with the ‘support’ of the Chief Minister and his office. There would be no point in the judicial inquiry if the Chief Minister and his office were not its primary focus, it concluded.

The subcommittee, headed by LDF convener Vaikom Viswan, would prepare the response to Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan’s invitation for talks on the terms of reference of the judicial probe on the basis of its discussions. The committee members are A.K. Balan (CPI-M), C. Divakaran (CPI), Mathew T. Thomas (JD-S), N.K. Premachandran (RSP), A.K. Saseendran (NCP), Kadannappally Ramachandran (Congress-S), and P.C. Thomas (Kerala Congress).

The subcommittee members were of the view that the LDF should not associate itself with the judicial inquiry if the Chief Minister and his office were not brought within its ambit. The LDF’s key demand was that the Chief Minister should face the probe as the scam could not have taken place in the way it did without his or his office’s support. “We don’t see this merely as a cheating case. If that is so, the whole issue need be investigated only by the police,” a committee member told The Hindu after the meeting. According to him, the LDF would not respond to the invitation for talks if there was no positive response to its demand. “Let the government come out with its stand, then we will also make our stand clear,” he said.

Meet begins

The State secretariat of the CPI(M) began a two-day meeting here on Tuesday. The meeting, convened as a follow-up to the party Polit Bureau and Central Committee meetings in New Delhi, would review the Secretariat siege organised by the Opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF). It would also go into various organisational matters.
