Nair Service Society (NSS) general secretary G. Sukumaran Nair has said the recent Secretariat siege organised by the Left Democratic Front (LDF) cannot be considered a failure by any means.
Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of a function held at Perunna on Saturday, Mr. Nair said the Opposition had conveyed a strong protest through its agitation.
It can also be surmised that the agitation was called off over the realisation that the siege became increasingly uncontainable. Mr. Nair, however, clarified that the NSS did not have a particular opinion or stance on the issue and comments made were based on his personal observations.
“None could deny the fact that the image of the UDF government has taken a beating in the wake of the recent developments,” he said.
The State was going through a phase of administrative impasse. Recent developments had been rightly predicted by the organisation on the basis of the ruling dispensation’s policies.
Even while stating that the “silence observed by the NSS had subtle significance” Mr. Nair said organisation did not seek to exploit the existing scenario.
He remained firm on his accusation that his phone was being tapped by the intelligence wing of the police.
There had been no effort on the part of any Congress leader, including A.K. Antony, to resolve the existing problems with NSS, he said.
Earlier, inaugurating the State conference of the Democratic School Teachers Association, Mr. Nair alleged that the UDF government and some leaders of the Indian Union Muslim League were indulging in efforts to “strangle” the aided school sector.
He opined that successive governments in the State had sought to destroy the system by violating the agreements entered between the ruling dispensation and managements.
Mr. Nair took a critical view of the unjustifiable circulars being issued by the Education Department in the name of upgradation and reforms. “The leaders of the government seldom hesitate in announcing that contentious circulars have been frozen in the wake of mounting opposition. However, I am not aware of any such circulars that have been withdrawn under such circumstances. Such negative measures would ultimately deny those hailing from financially-weaker backgrounds in pursuing education,” he claimed.
