The Left Democratic Front (LDF) district committee has completed its seat sharing exercise for the coming elections to local bodies in the district.
Announcing this at a press conference here on Saturday, LDF district convener K.P. Sahadevan said that the LDF had finalised the number of seats to be allocated to each coalition partner in district panchayat, grama panchayats, block panchayats and municipalities in the district.
He said that the Communist Party of India (Marxist) would field its candidates in 19 of the total 26 divisions in the district panchayat.
While the Communist Party of India (CPI) was allocated three seats, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Congress (S) and the Janata Dal (S) would be contesting in one seat each. The LDF would field an independent candidate in one seat.
The district panchayat divisions where the CPI(M) would contest the election are Karivellur, Mathamangalam, Sreekantapuram, Iritty, Patyam, Kathirur, Pinarayi, Vengad, Peralassery, Anjarakkandy, Thillankery, Mayyil, Elayavur, Pariyaram, Kadannappally, Kunhimangalam, Pappinissery, Cherukunnu and Panur. Azhikkal, Malur and Ulikkal were divisions where the CPI would field its candidates.
Janata Dal (S), NCP and Congress (S) were given Naduvil, Peravur and Pallikunnu divisions respectively. Peringalam would have an LDF-backed independent, Mr. Sahadevan said.
The LDF district convener also said that the names of the candidates to be fielded in the divisions would be announced on September 26.
He said that the LDF put up a united and strong fight in the local body elections in the district as it viewed the coming election as politically very important. The LDF would highlight various pro-people welfare measures taken by the LDF government in the State and expose the anti-people policies of the United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre, he announced.
Exuding the hope that the LDF would fare better than in the 2005 elections, Mr. Sahadevan said that the LDF had recorded good performance in the last election in terms of the number of seats and the expansion of the vote share. He said that the LDF was uncompromising in its stance against communal and extremist forces that were active in the State.
Among those present at the press meet included CPI(M) district secretary P. Sasi was among the LDF leaders present at the press meet.
