The Left Democratic Front’s (LDF) independent trump card K.T. Jaleel is seeking re-election from Thavanur with loads of confidence.

He is taking on Congress local man S. Ifthiqaruddin. In 2011, Mr. Jaleel secured a lead of 6,854 votes over the United Democratic Front’s (UDF) V.V. Prakash in the maiden election in Thavanur. The LDF enhanced its lead to 9,170 in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections in Thavanur.

Grama panchayats such as Edappal, Thavanur, Vattamkulam, Kaladi, Thriprangode, and Purathur are with the LDF. The UDF has an edge only in Mangalam grama panchayat.

The BJP has its second largest vote bank in the district in Thavanur.

The party polled 11.12 per cent votes from Tavanur in the 2014 Lok Sabha election. In the 2011 Assembly election, the BJP vote share was only 5.82 per cent. In 2009 (Lok Sabha poll), the BJP polled 10.1 per cent from here. BJP candidate Ravi Thelath is hopeful of bettering the party’s performance here.

Thavanur has 1,80,608 voters with 87,078 men and 93,530 women. There was an increase of 24,419 voters over the last five years.
