Kerala High Court Judge B. Kemal Pasha has said that good verdicts of judges are often the complement of good arguments by lawyers.

Judges alone should not be blamed if the verdicts are not up to the mark.

Justice Pasha said this while addressing a meeting here on Saturday to condole the death of lawyer P. Vijayaraghavan.

He said that in his opinion persons who have never practised law should not be made judges.

“Installing such persons in the seat of a judge does not augur well for the judicial system,” he said.

He said that a good judge should be aware of the difficulties faced by lawyers. There should also be mutual respect between judges and lawyers.

The judicial system stands for dispensing justice to the people. If those involved in the system have a feeling that they are dispensing justice in the name of God, then the judiciary will remain free from corruption and other vested interests. A judge should be well trained and qualified to occupy that post.

“Only if a judge delves into and studies a case properly could a judgment considering all aspects of the case be delivered. Lawyers should also correct themselves whenever mistakes are pointed out. Such qualities will develop in a lawyer if they train themselves under a good senior,” he said.

He said that Vijayaraghavan used to be a model senior lawyer.

The programme was organised by the Mass Arts Service Society.

President of the society X. Earnest presided. Former minister C.V. Padmarajan, lawyers V. Sugathan, E. Shanavas Khan and G. Sathyababu spoke. Society secretary A. Rasheed welcomed the gathering.
