Law to protect consumer rights before panel

The proposed amendments to the Consumer Protection Act are before the Parliament standing committee for approval, K.V. Thomas, Union Minister of State for Food and Consumer Affairs, has said.

In his address at the inauguration of the Centre for Consumer Protection Law and Policy at the National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS) here on Tuesday, Prof. Thomas said the Bill that proposed amendments to the Act would help in strengthening consumer protection rights.

The Minister said the Department of Food and Consumer Affairs had successfully checked wastage of food grain in storage houses across the country.

NUALS Vice Chancellor N.K. Jayakumar presided. P. Leelakrishnan, member of the executive council, and George Giri, lawyer, spoke.
