KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala on Monday found fault with the police which, he alleged, had failed to ensure Chief Minister Oommen Chandy’s security in the backdrop of the build-up of tension by supporters of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in Kannur district.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Chennithala said the Home Minister had ordered a probe in this context.

Reiterating his earlier stand that the stone-hurling incident had taken place with the complicity of the CPI(M) leadership, Mr. Chennithala said CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan should own up his party’s mistake and apologise to the people.

He wanted the CPI(M) and the Left Democratic Front (LDF) to give up their agitation against the Chief Minister.

Some of his observations were similar to the ones he made when Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) leader T.P. Chandrasekharan was murdered. The party has been instilling the cult of violence among workers in Kannur and the attack on the Chief Minister was another incident.

Mr. Chennithala said the CPI (M) and LDF were trying to give a new twist to their ongoing agitation, as it had failed to make an impact.

The attempt to physically endanger the Chief Minister of the State and an elected representative was unheard of in the history of the State.

The LDF constituents too had differed in the method of agitation, Mr. Chennithala said. He wanted the LDF to withdraw all forms of agitations against the Chief Minister.

He said the Congress and the UDF leadership had restrained its supporters from indulging in any kind of violence.

It had refrained from calling a hartal in protest against the incident because it did not want to emulate the CPI(M)’s tactics.

The party has also decided to observe October 31 as anti-violence day along with its customary observance of the day as Martyr’s Day on the occasion of Indira Gandhi’s death anniversary.

The party will also hold a massive convention in Kannur town on October 31 to mark its strong political protest against the attack on the Chief Minister, he said.
