Even as efforts are on to remove debris caused by a landslip at Kuthiran on the Thrissur-Palakkad National Highway, threat of another landslip looms large.
Heavy rain in Peechi forest area causes landslips at Kuthiran. In 2007, a major landslip near an Ayyappa temple in the area resulted in total disruption of traffic on the Thrissur-Palakkad route.
The pothole-riddled road at Kuthiran has become a nightmare for motorists. Thousands of trucks carrying consumer goods and construction material, and container lorries use the road every day. The poor condition of the road on the Pattikkad-Chuvannamunnu-Kuthiran-Irumbupalam-Vaniyampara stretch causes frequent traffic snarls. Accidents are also common here. Whenever an accident occurs, traffic along the stretch is disrupted for hours.
Rain-related damage
Total crop loss owing to the monsoon has reached Rs.3.705 crore, according to district administration figures. Vast tracts of coconut and plantain cultivation have been damaged in the heavy wind and rain.
In all, 313 houses were damaged in the district resulting in a loss of Rs.37 lakh. Twenty houses were totally damaged resulting in a loss of Rs.16 lakh. Five persons were killed in rain-related incidents. Seawalls were damaged in many areas.
As many as 1,279 people from flood-hit areas were rehabilitated to 30 relief camps at various places in the district.
The district has so far received 1220.275 mm rain this season. The water level at Peechi reservoir is 70.92 ft; Vazhani 52.42 ft; Chimmini 67.14 ft; and Peringalkuthu 424 ft.
Five dengue cases
Five more dengue cases were confirmed in the district on Friday. The cases were reported from Kakkad, Varantharappilly, Ollur and Koorkkanchery. In all, 2,278 cases of fever were reported in the district on Friday, of which 60 were admitted to various hospitals. About 361 cases of diarrhoea and one case of chicken pox were also reported.
