The United Democratic Front government has distributed 50,000 title deeds across the State during the two years it has been in power, Revenue Minister Adoor Prakash said here on Monday.
The Minister was inaugurating the district-level anniversary celebrations of the government.
Mr. Prakash said the government had promised in its policy statement steps to provide land to the landless and chalked out an action plan to complete that work by 2015. In the first phase, preparations were fast under way to provide three cents of land each to one lakh landless people before August 15.
The Minister said the government had decided to form 12 new taluks and 30 villages to address the problems facing the people more effectively.
He said the decision to open a government medical college in Konni was to address the shortcomings of the district in the healthcare sector. Eight new medical colleges would start functioning in the State soon.
He said the government had initiated several public welfare schemes in the healthcare sector. A major welfare measure was the scheme to utilise proceeds from Karunya Lottery for the treatment of people with serious diseases. A total of Rs. 110 crore had been distributed for such treatment.
The Minister inaugurated the distribution of title deeds and possession certificates and funds for medical treatment and other relief from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
Presiding over the meeting, K. Sivadasan Nair, MLA, said the State was being run by a government that understood and addressed the problems facing the common people. The support of the common people was its strength.
Anto Antony, MP, Saji Chacko, district panchayat president, and A. Sureshkumar, municipal chairman, spoke.
The Minister opened a photo exhibition on the development initiatives of the government organised by the Information and Public Relations Department.
