Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urging him to intervene urgently to address the problems faced by Keralites in Kuwait.
The Chief Minister suggested that the Kuwait government should be pressed to inform the Indian embassy in Kuwait of the arrest of Indian citizens and seek its clearance for deportation. Basic facilities should be provided to those arrested for deportation.
Mr. Chandy said six months time should be given to those who had broken visa regulations to continue working in Kuwait through an amnesty scheme and provide them opportunity to regularise their stay.
If that was not possible, they should be given three months to fulfil legal requirements for their stay in Kuwait.
Those who were unable to regularise their stay in Kuwait should be allowed to leave the country without jeopardising the scope for their return to Gulf countries through proper channels.
The Chief Minister recalled that the steps taken by the Union government when a similar situation arose in Saudi Arabia had been beneficial.
