The Kudumbasree Mission is all set to make a foray into the education sector by launching four community colleges.

Minister for Panchayats and Social Welfare M.K. Muneer said that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) would be signed next Thursday with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, for the first college. Kudumbasree executive director K.B. Valsala Kumari said that the mission was working on four community colleges, each specialising in a different area.

It had been proposed to have a Postgraduate Diploma in Development in association with the TISS.

There would be 40 seats for Kudumbasree members, she said.

The second community college would be launched in association with the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University and Kerala Agricultural University, where short-term courses for three to six months on the basics of agriculture, pest control, and dairy farming would be conducted.

The third college would conduct courses in automobile and construction and the fourth would be in general administration.

The courses were meant exclusively for the members of Kudumbasree and the fees would be kept at affordable levels, she said.

As part of the 16th anniversary celebrations of Kudumbasree, it had been proposed to conduct celebrations for four days starting next Tuesday. AICC president Sonia Gandhi will inaugurate the event.

Dr. Muneer said education was one of the new areas the Kudumbasree was entering.
