March 22, 2012 07:58 pm | Updated 07:58 pm IST - KOTTAYAM

Pakal Pooram, an attempt to recreate the Thrissur Pooram in the Land of Letters got underway here on Thursday evening to the accompaniment of heavy rains that lashed the town.

The day began with the arrival of ‘cheru poorams’ from the temples nearby. The Pakal Pooram ceremonies commenced by 4:30 pm with caparisoned elephants presenting themselves on either sides of the campus of the Thirunakkara Sreemahadevar Temple in full regalia reminding one of the pooram on the grounds of Vadakkumnatha temple, Thrissur.

Strict traffic regulations were put in place on account of the Pakal Pooram in the town from Thursday noon.
