Kottayam district panchayat president Radha V. Nair has stated that resolving the scarcity of drinking water will be given focus during her term.

At a press conference here on Thursday after her election to the post, Ms. Nair emphasised the need to find a lasting solution to the scarcity that has been witnessed in the district. “Certain projects will be proposed by the district panchayat to tackle the situation. We will also encourage installing rain-water harvesting structures at various places,” she said.

She said that added importance would be provided to the health sector in the district. “We will insist on the upgradation of the existing health facilities. Filling of vacancies in the field will also be an area of focus,” she said.

Measures would be made to transform barren lands into paddy fields, she said.

She also expressed optimism that the panchayat and other bodies would coordinate in order to improve sanitation in the district.

Replying to a query, Ms. Nair opined that women's reservation to various positions would prove instrumental in bringing down the incidence of corruption. Awareness training was being held at grassroots level in order to educate women on various issues.
