Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan will open the Karlad tourism centre, on the banks of Karlad Lake, near Thariyode, in Wayanad district at 4 p.m. on Monday.
The centre had been set up at a cost of Rs.69 lakh on the banks of the second largest freshwater lake in the district.
A felicitation centre, boating facilities, a heritage village, conference hall, two dormitories, a restaurant, a toilet block and a garden had been set up.
Four fibre boats including would be used. Electrification, setting up of the vehicle parking area, pavements etc had also been completed. The place will be illuminated, sources said.
The heritage village would have four cottages and a conference hall. Each cottage is a replica of tribal huts. These units will have a bedroom, kitchen and an attached bathroom, Rajeswar Dayal, secretary, District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) told The Hindu on Saturday.
This apart, the two other dormitories can accommodate 20 tourists each, he added.
The felicitation centre was constructed by the Public Works Department at a cost of Rs.14.82 lakh. The heritage village was constructed by the Kerala State Nirmithi Kendra at a cost of Rs.31.50 lakh, with financial assistance from the State Tourism Department.
The Karlad Lake falls under the Thariyode panchayat. The DTPC was asked to upgrade facilities to tap tourism potential.
A watch tower will be ready soon. The children of St. Anthony's Upper Primary School at Kottathara had planted bamboo saplings on the banks, Mr. Dayal said.
The work on the 4-km road, taken up at a cost of Rs.80 lakh, to connect the destination with Thariyode, the nearest town, will start soon under the Malabar Tourism Package, he added.
