March 29, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - KANNUR:

A State-level exhibition of khadi and village industries products will be held here from March 29 to April 13 by the Kerala Khadi and Village Industries Board (KKVIB) to celebrate the centenary of Gandhiji’s return from South Africa.

Talking to the media here, KKVIB chairman K.P. Nooruddin said that the exhibition being held at the Town Square would feature demonstration of clay products, beekeeping and khadi-weaving to allow the public to know the activities of khadi and village industries producers. Khadi fashion show and other cultural events including ‘poorakkali’ performance would also be held at the venue during the fair, he said.

Relevance of khadi

Mr. Nooruddin said that the relevance of khadi products in the changing times was the subject of a seminar held here on Saturday. An essay competition for high school students was also held at the Government Teacher Training Institute as part of the fair.

The organisers said that nearly 70 khadi and village industries units in the  State would participate in the fair. Also, the All India Khadi and Village Industries Commission and the State Industries Department would also have their stalls at the fair.

As the fair coincides with Vishu celebration, 30 per cent government rebate would be offered for purchase of the products at the exhibition from April 6 to 13.

The fair will be inaugurated by Rural Development Minister K.C. Joseph at 4 p.m. on March 29. P.K. Sreemathy, MP, and A.P. Abdullakutty, MLA, would also participate at the function, the organisers said.
