Santhosh John Abraham has taken charge as the national president of the Association of Surgeons of India (ASI), claimed to be the largest organisation of surgeons in the country. He assumed office at the annual meet of the association held in Hyderabad recently. It is for the first time after the inception of the association in 1938 that a Keralite has been elected president. He was elected president for 2015 through e-voting in November 2013.
The association has a membership of nearly 20,000 surgeons. Dr. Abraham had undergraduate and postgraduate surgical training from Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram. He had undergone further specialty training in the U.K. On return to India in 1990, he joined the Department of Surgical Oncology at Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram. Since 1995, he has been working at a hospital in Kochi. — Special Correspondent
