Health officials rule out cholera

The outbreak of acute diarrhoeal disease (ADD) at Pulluvila is likely to be a food or water-borne infection caused by either E.coli or staphylococcus bacterial strains, senior health officials said on Friday.

“No new cases of ADD have been reported from the area on Friday and all those who reported sick are now stable and recuperating well. Through lab tests, we have now confirmed that the very first patient who reported with typical ADD symptoms is cholera negative. The other results on water and stool samples are awaited, but we are more or less certain that this is not a cholera outbreak,” a senior Health official said.

Preventive steps

A total of 35 persons had been reported with ADD from the locality for the past two days.

A team from the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College visited the area again on Friday for detailed investigations while health workers have already launched preventive and control measures.
