The Koothuparamba police have registered a case against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader V. Muraleedharan and some 50 party workers on a complaint against provocative and intimidating slogans raised during the party's Janaraksha Yatra here a few days ago.
The police said that the case was registered on Sunday on a complaint forwarded by the Thalassery Deputy Superintendent of Police. The complaint was lodged by one C. Rashid, a native of Chirakkara near Thalassery.
The case was registered against the BJP former State president and workers under Indian Penal Code Sections 153 (promoting enmity between different groups), 506 (criminal intimidation) and Kerala Police Act Section 120(o) (causing nuisance).
The complainant submitted that a live video of the march at Koothuparamba posted on Mr. Muraleedharan's Facebook page showed the BJP workers raising slogans intimidating CPI(M) district secretary P. Jayarajan. By posting the video on his Facebook page, the BJP leader was trying to create enmity and mislead the people, the complaint said.
Mr. Jayarajan at a press conference on Saturday had demanded that the police register cases against the BJP leader and workers for the provocation and violent slogans raised during the march.
Mr. Muraleedharan, in his reaction, said the case was part of the CPI(M)’s bid to trap BJP workers in fabricated cases.
