The government will take up a survey of non-resident Keralites (NoRKs) in May this year.

The Department of Non-Resident Keralites Affairs (NoRKA) will join the Centrally-sponsored survey to be undertaken by the Department of Economic and Statistics. The department will introduce questionnaire in addition to the format of the survey proposed at the national level.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told the media that the Cabinet had sanctioned Rs.1.98 crore for meeting the additional expenditure for expanding the scope of the survey.

The Chief Minister said after the Cabinet meeting here on Wednesday that the survey would cover the whole population of Kerala. He urged the families of non-resident Keralites to cooperate with the survey by providing data. There were apprehensions among such families that the information provided by them would lead to increased incidence of various levies. The data was needed for planning programmes for them.

He said that the survey would begin on May 1.
