The Kerala government has decided to make a thorough review of safety of tourism centres in the state following the Thekkady boat tragedy which claimed 44 lives.
As part of this, state Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has convened a meeting of Forest and Water Resources ministers and top officials of the departments here on Monday.
An official source said the meeting would take stock of the situation in tourism centres, especially of five major boating centres.
The meeting would evolve measures to be taken to ensure safety of tourists coming to major tourism spots, the source said here today.
Thekkady, located in the Periyar Wildlife sanctuary, is the oldest and internationally known tourism spot in Kerala.
“Safety of boating and allied activities has become vital since water tourism has emerged as a major attraction of Kerala,” the source said.
The mishap occurred on Wednesday when the tourist boat capsized after cruising five km.
