Kerala to raise 3000 home guards

The Cabinet on Wednesday approved a proposal to raise 3000 home guards under the Home Department.

They will assist the authorities in fire control and rescue efforts, traffic control, providing security during fairs and festivals and in disaster management.

The Cabinet raised the government guarantee for deposits accepted by the Kerala Transport Development and Finance Corporation from Rs. 400 crore to Rs. 600 crore.

It also approved the rules under the Kerala Forests (Vesting and Management of Ecologically Fragile Lands) Amendment Act which make it easy for small farmers to reclaim land taken over by the government under the Act.

Solatium of Rs. 5 lakh each will be given to the families of two children who were killed in an accident involving a mini lorry in Kannur recently. Assistance would be given for treatment of five other children hit by the mini lorry while they were returning home from Sunday school,
