Kerala to form Maritime Board

The Kerala Cabinet on Wednesday approved a draft Bill for formation of a Maritime Board in the State.

The Board would be constituted by merging the Ports Department, Hydrographic Survey Wing and the State Maritime Development Corporation. The Board will oversee various activities in the maritime sector, Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan told the media after the Cabinet meeting.

Employment guarantee:

The Cabinet also gave the green signal for implementation of the Urban Employment Guarantee Scheme proposed in the Budget for the current year. It also decided to extend coverage of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act to khadi, handloom, coir, reed, bamboo and sanitary workers with the objective of guaranteeing jobs for at least 100 days in a year.

It approved a proposal to provide one month’s maternity leave with wages to workers in the unorganised sector.
