Kerala to achieve total primary education by April 18, 2015

Minister for Education P.K. Abdu Rabb here on Thursday praised the district for playing an exemplary role in promoting literacy activities.

Speaking after handing over the flag of a new total primary education programme titled Athulyam, Mr. Rabb said that the State was poised to achieve total primary education by next April 18. Veliyankode grama panchayat president Veeran Kutty accepted the flag from Mr. Rabb. Naseer Melethil, who designed a logo for the Athulyam project, was honoured at the function.

Local bodies roped in

The State Literacy Mission is implementing the project by involving the local bodies across the State. As many as 140 civic bodies across the State had achieved total primary education in the first phase of the project, with Kannur and Kasaragod becoming the first districts in the State to attain this distinction.

All civic bodies in the State will observe Flag Day on Friday to mark the project. The Athulyam flags will be hoisted at the civic bodies at 10 a.m. on Friday. Mr. Rabb said that a survey would soon be launched to identify those lacking in primary education. The project is to ensure primary education to all people between 15 and 50 years of age across the State.

Five study centres which mobilised highest resources to construct Akshara Bhavanam for Yunus and Majida, two learners suffering from muscular dystrophy, were felicitated on the occasion. They were the centres of Edappal, Edavanna, Tirurangadi, Parappanangadi and Peruvallur.
