Close on the heels of its decision to appoint Dalits as priests in temples controlled by the Devaswom Boards, the Kerala government has decided to reserve 10% of Devaswom posts for economically backward sections in forward communities.

Briefing reporters after the weekly Cabinet meeting here, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the decision was taken as part of the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) that economically backward sections in forward communities should have reservation, which would need a Constitution amendment.

However, in this case, it could be done without a Constitution amendment as there was no reservation for minority communities in Devaswom postings, the chief minister said.

The Cabinet has also decided to enhance the reservation for Ezhava community from 14% to 17%, for SC/ST from 10% to 12% and for communities other than Ezhavas from 3% to 6% in Devaswom postings, he said.
