It will be 125 years on Friday since the first Legislature in Kerala had its first meeting. The eight-member Travancore Legislative Council held its first meeting on August 23, 1888, with Dewan T. Rama Rao in the chair.

Ever since, legislative bodies in the State have passed around 1,500 Acts with long-reaching impact.

The Kerala Assembly Secretariat has been organising a series of programmes in connection with the jubilee. These will conclude next month.

Speaker G. Karthikeyan said in a release here on Tuesday that the three-day valedictory would be attended by Union and State Ministers, cultural leaders, and journalists. Vice-President Hamid Ansari would address the House on September 7 as part of the valedictory. This would be followed by a media seminar on September 27, and a get-together of employees and former employees of the Legislature Secretariat on the next day. The valedictory meeting would be held on September 30. The Speaker said the year-long celebrations was inaugurated on August 23 last year by Maharashtra Governor K. Sankaranarayanan. President Pranab Mukherjee addressed the House in October. This was followed by exhibitions, seminars, and other programmes.

The new legislature museum was opened by Governor Nikhil Kumar in April.

The programmes had helped to disseminate information on the functioning of the legislature to the people, and throw light on the new development culture.
