A girl from Alappuzha will be the only Indian representative in the girls' wing of the Asian Cadet table tennis team (Under-15) that will participate in the 2011 Global Cadet Challenge to be held in San Juan, Puerto Rico, from October 14.

According to information reaching Maria Roni, a Class IX student of the S.D.V. English Medium Higher Secondary School here, from Table Tennis Federation of India secretary general D.R. Choudhary, the selection was made on the basis of her performance in the recently held 17th Asian Junior Table Tennis Championship.

Ms. Roni will be accompanied by Liu Gaoyang (China), Kim Jisum (Korea), and Doo Hoi Kem (Hong Kong) and will have a three-day practice session at San Juan prior to the event.

Daughter of Roni Mathew and Reena Roni, Ms. Roni has been winning accolades in table tennis circles for quite some time now, the latest being a silver medal won as part of the Indian doubles team in the junior girls category of the U.S. Open Table Tennis held at Milwaukee, United States.

Ms. Roni practises at Alappuzha YMCA's Table Tennis Academy, and is coached by Bobby Joseph.

Ms. Roni was congratulated by Union Minister of State for Power K.C. Venugopal, T.M. Thomas Isaac, MLA, and others on her achievement on Sunday.
