Estate workers in Theni unable to go to work

All vehicles, including buses, did not operate to Kerala from Theni district on Thursday owing to the bandh called by the Periyar Dam Retrieval Committee and political parties in the neighbouring State, upset at the Supreme Court’s Wednesday ruling that allowed Tamil Nadu to raise the water level of the Mullaperiyar dam to 142 feet.

The dawn-to-dusk bandh was total in Idukki district. All shops put up the shutters, and no vehicle was allowed to cross the border. Thousands of estate workers in the district could not go to work.

However, vehicles transporting milk, vegetables and meat crossed the border before 6 a.m.

The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation suspended all services to Kerala and limited its services up to Lower Camp and Cumbum Mettu.

The Kerala police tightened security at the Kumuli checkpoint and the Theni police deployed personnel at Lower Camp.
