Kollam Chief Judicial Magistrate Ajitha K. Hassan on Monday ordered custody of prime accused in the medical college admission scam, Kavitha Pillai, to the Kollam East police for two days. The police had asked her custody for five days.
The police were directed to produce Kavitha before the same court at 11 a.m. on Tuesday. She was produced before the Kollam court in connection with a case of allegedly cheating one Vimal Kumar of Kottarakara of Rs.13 lakh by promising admission to his daughter at a self-financing medical college.
Kavitha is the second accused in the case and R. Rashlal, a native of Kollam, is the first accused. The alleged cheating took place at a university service centre operated by the latter.
According to the police, the amount was handed over to Rashlal and his accomplice Shiju at the centre. Both are absconding.
Vimal Kumar told the police that while paying the amount, Rashlal had talked to Kavitha over phone. As security for the amount received Rashlal had given a cheque for the same amount to Vimal Kumar. When reports about the scam came out, Vimal Kumar submitted the cheque to the bank but it bounced, following which he lodged a complaint with the Kollam East police.
