Collector asks for details on drought-prone areas

Drought review meeting held

As the State is bracing up to face prospects of an intense summer spell in the coming months, the district administration has asked the authorities to give authentic information on the drought prone areas in the region.

At a drought review meeting held at the Collectorate conference hall here on Saturday, District Collector P.S. Muhammed Sagir has directed the panchayat and municipal authorities to share details to effectively tackle the situation.

The meeting urged the authorities to complete the work on the unfinished drinking water projects by March end. The meeting also decided to transport drinking water to the drought prone areas in emergency situations.

Addressing the meeting N.A. Nellikkunnu, MLA, called up on the local bodies to take the initiative to conserve and renovate traditional water reservoirs like unused wells and ponds to tackle the impending drought situation. The ongoing drinking water projects at Mulliyar and Pullur-Periye panchayats falling under Uduma Assembly constituency limits would be completed by next year, K. Kunhiraman, MLA, told the meeting.

Water harvesting

Besides taking initiative to conserve water reservoirs, the panchayats also should take measures for encouraging water harvesting.

The local body members urged the authorities to address the power shortage by sanctioning fresh power connections to draw water from the reservoirs. Panchayat and municipal representatives, besides district officials also attended the meeting.
