Sunny George, a small farmer from Choorappadavu near Cherupuzha in Kannur district, has been selected for the biennial Karshakasree award for outstanding farmer in the State. The award instituted by Malayala Manorama carries a cash prize of Rs. Two lakh, a gold medallion and a citation.

Declaring the award, Jacob Mathew, executive editor, Malayala Manorama and R.T. Ravi Varma, editor-in-charge, Karshakasree, said the judging committee headed by M.S. Swaminathan had appreciated the innovative efforts and the ingenuity with which Sunny George — who began his career as a farm labourer — became a phenomenally successful farmer by changing an original barren land into a successful farm.

He was selected from 101 entries received for competition. Sunny George is the 10th recipient of the award.
