Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said here on Monday that it was for the Karnataka Police to comment on the legal aspects of the case against People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader Abdul Nasir Maudany.

Only the agency that has registered a criminal case following an investigation can comment on the legal aspects, the Minister told reporters on the sidelines of a function to distribute financial aid to the children of jail inmates. He said since the case had been registered in Bangalore, it was for the Karnataka Police to decide on Mr. Maudany's arrest. Mr Maudany has been named an accused in the Bangalore serial blasts case.

He said the State government would extend all help to the Karnataka Police team that was camping in Kollam to execute the arrest warrant against Mr. Maudany. The Home Minister said no force in the State would be allowed to create communal polarisation.

Earlier, inaugurating the distribution of educational financial aid to the children of jail inmates, the Minister said the State had a social responsibility to protect the families of prisoners. A hapless family of a convicted prisoner should not be the breeding ground of more criminals, he said adding that the government was of the view that jails should be centres for reforming the convicts. The government's decision to increase wages of prisoners and to introduce a provision that mandated the jail authorities to send half the wages to the families of the inmates was part of this policy, he said adding that human rights should be protected everywhere.

Health Minister P.K. Sreemathi presided over the function. District Collector V.K. Balakrishnan and Social Welfare secretary Usha Titus were among those present at the function.
