The Kannur University has placed under suspension former Head of the Department (HoD) of Mathematics T.V. Ramakrishnan on complaints from his students of sexual misconduct.
Confirming the suspension of the professor, university sources said the decision was in continuation of the earlier disciplinary actions against him following the complaints. He had earlier been removed from the post of HoD. The university had also recommended that he should undergo mandatory counselling at a government facility.
Following the complaints, the university’s internal complaints committee submitted its report which found that the teacher was guilty. The latest action of the university to suspend him followed the plea of the complainants to university Vice Chancellor Gopinath Ravindran seeking justice. The complainants were three female students of the Mathematics Department of the university.
According to their complaints, the HoD had made inappropriate advances on December 28, 2016, after calling them one by one to his office. A complaint was first sent to the then Vice Chancellor anonymously. When no action was taken, they sent their complaints to the Education Minister and the Governor. Subsequently, the university authorities lodged a police complaint.
