Students of Kannur University’s Thalassery campus at Palayad continued their blockade of the campus for the third on Wednesday in protest against the university authorities’ alleged failure to renew Bar Council affiliation for the LLB course being offered by the university’s School of Legal Studies (SLS).

As part of intensifying the agitation, jointly held by the Students Federation of India (SFI) and the Kerala Students Union (KSU), Campus Students’ Union chairman and SFI leader P. Swaraj began an indefinite fast on the campus on Wednesday.

The fast was inaugurated by T.V. Rajesh, MLA.

Kannur district panchayat president K.V. Sumesh also addressed the students.

Health students join

The agitating students say that the Bar Council’s affiliation had not been renewed since it expired in 2009. They blamed the university authorities for the situation. The students of the University School of Health Science also joined the agitation saying that their course does not have recognition of the Paramedical Council of India.

SFI leader and SLS student M.K. Hassan said the university authorities had called a meeting of representatives of the students for a discussion on July 28.
