A huge crowd turned up for the rally to mark the conclusion of the national conference of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions here on Monday.

CITU president A.K. Padmanabhan inaugurated the rally and presided over the function. George Mavrikos, general secretary of the World Federation of Trade Unions, and Tapan Sen, general secretary of the CITU, addressed the rally. Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] Polit Bureau member Kodiyeri Balakrishnan and CPI (M) leaders P.K. Sreemathy, M. Prakashan, Elamaram Karim, K.P. Sahadevan, and Anathalavattom Anandan were present at the rally. Red flags and festoons decorated the roads and pathways leading to Jawahar stadium, the venue of the programme. People thronged the stadium in large numbers. CITU workers and their family members from different parts of the district also reached the stadium.

Traffic was diverted in the town. Vehicles were parked at a distance from the programme venue, and people walked in procession to reach there. The five-day conference concluded around noon with the election of the new CITU secretariat.

A history exhibition, which was a major attraction of the conference, also concluded on Monday. Long queues were seen outside the specially arranged exhibition venue.
