One of the two convicted criminals who escaped from the Central Jail here in a daredevil jailbreak in the early hours of June 14 was nabbed by a five-member Kannur police team from Udagamandalam of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday.

K.P. Jayanandan (39), hailing from Mala in Thrissur, was arrested by the police team from a rented room at Wellington at Udagamandalam at around 5 p.m. He had escaped from the jail with another convict Riyaz (26) of Kasaragod, who was still absconding. The police team led by Kannur Town Circle Inspector P.P. Sadanandan had left for Udagamandalam on Tuesday night following information that Jayanandan was staying in a rented room with his wife and children.

Jayanandan was brought here after 5 p.m. and was being questioned by police officers led by Superintendent of Police K.P. Philip.

Mr. Philip told reporters that as per Jayanandan's disclosure, the duo had planned the escape four months ago. They initially used a broken portion of a hacksaw blade they got from the jail premises. When that failed to cut the iron bar of their cell, they had got a fresh hacksaw blade through an outsider, who was the brother of a deceased convict Jayanandan had known.

They always used the hacksaw blade to cut the bar whenever there was some work going on inside the jail so that the sound would not be heard. On June 13/14 night, they had used it when other prisoners were watching the World Cup football tournament on television.
