On an assurance of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy that stern action will be taken against illegal sand-mining in Kerala, Jazeera V. called off her four-month sit-in at the Jantar Mantar here on Friday. “I am glad that the Chief Minister met me personally and promised to take measures to stop illegal sand-mining in the State,” she said.

Ms. Jazeera was on dharna against illegal mining along the Neerozhukkumchal beach in Kannur. An autorickshaw driver by profession, she had earlier staged a protest in Thiruvananthapuram on the issue. However, she shifted her protest to the national capital as the State government did not take note of her protest. Ms. Jazeera had been on dharna since October 6, outside Kerala House, in the hope of getting a fruitful result to her silent campaign.
