The mortal remains of Lance Naik Sam Abraham, an Army jawan who was killed in cross-border firing in Jammu and Kashmir, will be brought back on Sunday evening.

According to sources, the body will be received at the Thiruvananthapuram airport with official honours at 8 p.m., before being taken to his native place at Ponakam, near Mavelikara. The funeral will be held on Monday.

The body would be kept at Bishop Hodges Higher Secondary School, Mavelikara, on Monday between 9.30 a.m. and 11 a.m. for the public to pay their respects. It will then be taken to his house before the funeral service at St. Gregorios Orthodox Church, Punnamoodu, later in the day.

Sam, 34, a member of the Sixth Madras Regiment, died after Pakistan Army initiated unprovoked firing of small arms, automatics and mortars in the Sunderbani sector along the Line of Control on Friday. Due to heavy shelling from across the border, his body could only be retrieved by around 6.30 p.m.

Sam was to retire in November 2018, after 17 years of service. He is survived by pregnant wife Anu, daughter Angel, and parents Abraham John and Saramma.
