K.T. Jaleel, MLA, on Tuesday alleged that the United Democratic Front (UDF) government paved the way for the Governor to intervene in the matters of the University of Calicut (CU).

Describing Governor P. Sathasivam as an agent of the Sangh Parivar, Mr. Jaleel said that the UDF government, and Education Minister P.K. Abdu Rabb in particular, would be responsible for providing a platform for Sangh Parivar elements to make interventions in the University of Calicut. Addressing a large group of protesting teachers on the University of Calicut campus here, Mr. Jaleel said the lackadaisical attitude of the government towards the issues which rocked the university had worsened the situation.

“Instead of addressing the issues on time, the government chose to remain a silent spectator. It took no action when stern action was needed. It looked the other way,” Mr. Jaleel said.

He added that the UDF government’s apathy would help the Governor, appointed by the BJP government at the Centre, to intervene in the affairs of the University of Calicut.

Teachers protest

The teachers, under the banner of the Association of Calicut University Teachers, staged a unique protest by holding classes in front of the university administrative building.

They protested against the government for not including any of their representative in the discussions held in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday to resolve the issues.
