Thuravoor and Aroor grama panchayats in the district are among the local government bodies selected by the Union government to implement the ‘jal gram’ scheme. The programme is intended to protect water resources and ensure 55 litres of waters to every individual daily.
The new scheme, being implemented by the Union Ministry for Water Resources as a pilot project now, will be extended to more panchayats. The programme focuses on optimal use of water resources.
Under the programme, villages facing utmost water scarcity in every district are identified as Jal Grams. The idea is to pool assistance of other central government ministries and voluntary organisations to take up works. Union government plans to implement the scheme in every district in the country.
The scheme envisions involvement of various stakeholders to focus on issues of water resources planning at the local level and to generate awareness on water conservation. Thuravoor grama panchayat does not have a water storage tank of its own, under the Japan drinking water scheme. A storage tank in Kuthiathode was catering to the needs of several areas.
The panchayat, surrounded by sea and backwaters, was facing acute shortage of drinking water, panchayat president E. Rajeswari told The Hindu . The panchayat has been asked to submit a report on the status of water resources and funds would be made available to protect them, she said. Aroor, another coastal panchayat, too had been experiencing scarcity of water. The new scheme would enable adequate flow of funds for protecting available water resources such as wells and tanks, Aroor grama panchayat president C.K. Pushpan told The Hindu.
