The Indian Union Mulsim League would forge electoral understandings with the Indian National League, an estranged ally of ruling Left Democratic Front, in the upcoming local body elections in Kerala, party state General Secretary P K Kunhalikutty said on Monday.
IUML State Working Committee meeting held here on Monday endorsed the move to seek the support of the INL in the elections and the party would strive to accommodate interests of all the like-minded parties willing to join hands with the opposition UDF, Mr. Kunhalikutty told a press conference at Kozhikode.
IUML has discussed the INL issue at the high power committee of the UDF held in Ernakulam on Sunday, he said.
However, he parried a question on the possible merger of the two parties in the coming days maintaining that he could not predict such a situation for the moment.
A section of the Indian National League that came into being after dissociating with the IUML some 14 years ago had expressed willingness to join hands with the parent party, ahead of the local body polls.
Mr. Kunhalikutty said the IUML had no plans to join hands with the Socialist Democratic Party of India, the political outfit floated by the Popular Front of India, a Muslim outfit, he said.
He said the State Working Committee would press the Centre to grant voting rights to lakhs of expatriate Indians, most of whom belonged to the Mulsim community, employed in the Gulf and other nations.
He accused the CPI(M) led - LDF Government of showing least interest in fulfilling the long cherished aspirations of NRIs.
He claimed the IUML had received overwhelming support from the grassroot level workers to its door-to-door campaign against the “misrule” of the LDF Government.
