Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) secretary E.T. Mohammed Basheer has said that a racket is working behind Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan prompting him to make baseless allegations with hidden agendas.
Speaking to reporters here on Friday after a State working committee meeting of the party, Mr. Basheer demanded an investigation to bust the racket.
Referring to Mr. Achuthanandan’s latest allegations on human trafficking via the Malappuram passport office, Mr. Basheer said all his allegations were baseless.
“A gunman is deputed to the service of a Minister from the Home Department for only the duration of his post and hence not an ally of the Minister. The passport officers in Mumbai, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Jammu, Srinagar, and Jalandhar are police officers and hence it is not against the law to appoint a policeman as passport officer in Malappuram. The said person was appointed following all the usual procedures. If Mr. Achuthanandan had any complaints against the Central government’s refusal of his complaint regarding the appointment, he could have approached court,” Mr. Basheer said.
He brushed aside Mr. Achuthanandan’s allegation that women were trafficked after changing their ages. Of 120 cases connected to the passport office in Malappuram, not even one is linked to any woman. There are no charges against these 120 people other than that they had changed their date of birth in their passports, he said.
He said Mr. Achuthanandan’s allegations were cruel and not befitting an Opposition leader. However, he declined to comment on the allegations of corruption against the passport officer and said it did not affect the Muslim League and hence the party did not have to comment on it.
