IUML announces nominees; ministry expansion tomorrow

The UDF ministry in Kerala headed by Congress leader Oommen Chandy will be expanded tomorrow with nine nominees of Congress, three from Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and one from Kerala Congress (M) joining the cabinet.

Mr. Chandy and six ministers, each one representing the coalition constituents, were sworn in on May 18.

Former minister M K Muneer and V K Ibraim Kunju and MLA from Tirurangadi P K Abdurabb will join the ministry as IUML nominees tomorrow, party state president Panakkad Syid Hyderali Thangal said here today.

Congress had announced its nine ministerial nominees yesterday, which included its lone woman MLA P K Vijayalakshmi, who contested the polls as a nominee of AICC General Secretary Rahul Gandhi.

Others in the Congress list are former ministers Aryadan Muhammad, Thiruvanchur Radhakrishnan, Adoor Prakash and A P Anil Kumar. Other Congress MLAs K C Joseph, K Babu, C N Balakrishnan and V S Sivakumar will become ministers for the first time.

As per the agreement among the front partners, Congress will get Home while the Finance will go to Kerala Congress (M) stalwart K M Mani.

Muslim League leader P K Kunhalikutty will hold Industries and IT, M K Muneer Social Welfare and Local Bodies and Abdu Rabb, becoming minister for the first time, would be given Education.

As per the agreement, IUML is expected to get one more cabinet berth of Parliamentary Affairs minister, who will be sworn in later.

Former minister P J Joseph will be the second nominee of the Kerala Congress (M).

Besides Kunhalikkutty and Mani, K P Mohanan (SJD), T M Jacob (Kerala Cong—J), K B Ganesh Kumar (KC—B) and Shibu Baby John (RSP—B) had joined the ministry on May 18.
