Italian deputy foreign minister Staffan de Mistura, who has been camping here for the past fortnight, left for Rome on Wednesday morning.

Mr. Mistura and his four-member team boarded a flight bound for Dubai from the international airport here at 11a.m. They were expected to fly to Rome from Dubai later.

Mr. Mistura had met Chief Minister Oomen Chandy, requesting him to relocate the two Italian marines, currently under judicial remand at the Central Prison here, to a more secure location.

The State police had earlier arrested the marines, Massimiliano Lattore and Salvatore Girone, on the charge of shooting to death two Indian fishermen from onboard the Italian-flagged merchant vessel Enrica Lexie , which they were tasked to guard, off the coast of Kochi on February 15.

On the basis of a magisterial court's order, Mr. Mistura and his team had met the marines at least for an hour on an almost daily basis. He last met them at the 125-year-old sprawling Central Prison complex on Tuesday.
