Muslims in Kerala will celebrate Id-ul-Fitr on Tuesday, marking the culmination of a month-long Ramzan fasting.
Kazis in the State have declared the beginning of the Islamic month of Shawwal on Tuesday as none sighted the new moon after Sunday’s Iftar.
Among the Kazis to announce that Monday would be the 30th day of Ramzan and, therefore, Id-ul-Fitr would be on Tuesday were Syed Hyderali Shihab Thangal of Panakkad, Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama general secretary Cherussery Zainuddin Musliar, Syed Mohammed Koya Thangal of Kozhikode, O.P.M. Syed Mutukoya Thangal of Malappuram, Syed Mohammed Jifri Mutukoya Thangal of Kahangad, and K. Alikutty Musliar of Kasargod.
People waited eagerly for the announcement from the Kazis on Sunday evening. Mr. Hyderali Thangal’s announcement came around 8.30 p.m., putting at rest anxieties of the faithful and businessmen alike.
Id-gahs will be arranged for Id prayers in most towns on Tuesday morning. Organisers said here that the prayers in Id-gahs would depend on the morning weather. If it rains on Tuesday morning, the prayers would be shifted to mosques.
Majority of the Sunnis, however, will hold their Id prayers in mosques. The prayers will be held between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. across the State.
Shops and markets across the State, particularly in Malabar, witnessed a heavy rush on Sunday. Women and children were seen shopping enthusiastically for clothes, footwear and fancy items. All major textile shops in towns functioned overtime on Sunday evening.
