The total losses suffered in the recent rain havoc in Idukki district was estimated at Rs. 211.17 crore, including losses suffered in agriculture and damage to houses and roads.

The total agriculture-related loss was estimated at Rs. 35.80 crore. This included damage to standing crops and crops destroyed due to the landslips.

As many as 1,760 houses were damaged in the rains and landslips. An official from the district control room at Painavu said Thodupuzha taluk, followed by Devikulam and Udumbanchola taluks, lost the most number of houses.

The losses suffered due to road damage were estimated at 58.75. Two National Highways — Koci Dhanushkody and Kollam- Theni — suffered heavily in the district.

Thodupuzha-Puliyanmala road, Idukki-Neryamanfgalam road, Thodupuzha-Vannappuram-Chelachuvadu road, Munnar-Kumily road and Lakshmi-Mankulam road were affected.

The total estimate is as per the report submitted by various departments, including Animal Husbandry and Minor Irrigation, said the official.

District Collector Ajit Patil had directed the heads of each department to submit a separate estimate on the losses suffered in the recent rains. He said that the district administration has prepared a report on the losses so as to deliver the compensation in time and to take up the rebuilding of roads and infrastructure in a speedy manner.
