Idukki cooperative bank takes up housing scheme

February 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:38 am IST - KATTAPPANA:

The Idukki District Cooperative Bank (IDCB) has devised a Rs. 200-crore housing scheme for the economically backward sections, modelled on the lines of the E.M.S. Housing Scheme in the State.

The scheme named Idukki Model Jawahar Housing Scheme will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy here on Saturday. It will be implemented in association with the three-tiered local bodies.

IDCB president E.M. Augusthy told The Hindu that the association of Idukki district grama panchayat presidents had forwarded the blueprint of the scheme to the government and it was selected as a model for building houses to the poor sections. “This is for the first time that a cooperative bank is taking the initiative to implement a housing scheme in a large scale,” he said, adding that the cooperative sector had played a major role in the economically backward district. The government has agreed to increase the plan fund allocation for the scheme so that it would be a continuous process, he added.
