Idukki: Chennithala seeks immediate central support

KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala on Wednesday said that the centre should immediately provide Rs 100 crore as part of a Rs 500 crore help to rebuild Idukki district devastated in the landslips and rains.

Addressing a press conference after visiting the affected areas of Cheeyappara, Rajakkad, Kunjithanny, Thadiyampad and Kuzhipilly, he said that a central team should be immediately deployed to asses the damage. It should be declared a national calamity, he said adding that the affected persons should be provided free ration with out the consideration of APL or BPL families.

He said the agriculture land has been washed out and spice production has been hit badly with cardamom bearing the brunt. The Spices Board should revise its Rs 2 per plant policy and increase it considerably.

He said that it was shocking to find very poor people in the APL category in different parts of Idukki which is a matter of concern and that the government should look into it and take corrective steps.

He said that the KPCC will sponsor the educational expenses of the son of Jose in Thadiaymadu near Idukki where Jose had lost his two daughters.

The KPCC team would submit a detailed report of the losses suffered by the district shortly.

He said that Revenue Minister Adoor Prakash will visit the district to study the damages suffered in the rains. He will talk to the Revenue minister to provide comnpensation to the people in a way to rebuild their life . There should be long term plans to mitiate the suffering of the affected people, he said. A total of 19 people had died in the district since monsoon started.
